The project seeks maximum integration with the existing urban context, preserving the existing wall as an identifying element and access control device, as well as the main building and the water mill, which is restored and incorporated as a landmark within the public garden.
The intervention occupies the smallest possible footprint at ground level in order to preserve the existing vegetation, shaded areas, and create a landscaped outdoor space linked to the library. The rest of the programme is placed on the basement level, naturally lit and ventilated through a sequence of courtyards that bring in daylight, green views, and spaces of interaction with users. One of these courtyards will be accessible and will serve as an outdoor reading area.
In this way, the programme is concentrated on only two levels, while the visible volumetric impact of the new library is reduced as much as possible.
